All I could think was "I hope she goes by Spike".

Hi, folks! Long-time watcher and reader, first-time poster here. *waves* Anyway, just a couple of things that I thought might be of interest.

Firstly, is anyone else getting frustrated by the Heroes webisode advertisements around here? I keep seeing Going Postal: the Web Series, and thinking, "OMG! They've filmed Going Postal!" The first time I saw it, I actually dashed off to Google to see what was up. I still get a little thrill when it pops up, and then am disappointed to see it's not a new DW film. As a Yank, I have to keep my eyes peeled for that kind of thing- the film version of Color of Magic snuck up on me in a similar fashion.

Secondly, I think I've found a nearly perfect person to play Carrot Ironfoundersson, should he ever appear in a future filmed Discworld story. I say nearly perfect because he's American, a brunet, and an inch shy of the required 6'3". It's Matt Keeslar, currently portraying the title character of ABC Family's show The Middleman (awesome program, BTW, a clever, colorful, hilarious X-Files parody). Anyway, he's got that perfect quality of authority mixed with not quite innocence and intelligence hidden in plain sight. Really, exactly what I'd like to see when Carrot comes on the screen.

LJ Meme [Jul. 23rd, 2008|11:16 pm]

silent__dreamer
1. What time did you get up this morning? 7:45 but then went back to sleep at 8:30.  I think I'm getting burnt out.  I need a change of scenery b/c I am just getting tired of things despite the fact that we went camping/kayaking last weekend.

2. Diamonds or pearls? Diamonds, pearls have always seemed a bit duller

3. What was the last film you saw at the cinema? The Dark Knight.  Ahhh I can just write on and on about the batman world.  Another thing that I liked more in Batman BEgins was the feel of Gotham.  I rewatched a few of my favorite bits yesterday on youtube and realized that the two movies are really completely different in terms of style/type.  Gotham in the first one seemed a bit gritter, dirtier, older, surrounded by this dark brownish yellow hue and a tad bit more personal and in TDK it seemed (like everything else) glossier but far more distant.

4. What is your favorite TV show? Simpsons (seasons 2-10 are golden) , the first two season of Veronica Mars were pretty awesome, and right now I have a soft spot for 30 rock.

5. What do you eat for breakfast this morning?half a bagel w/ cream cheese while walking to work.  I love eating food on the go.

6. What is your middle name? N/A.  '

7. What food do you dislike? Also spicy food, bland things, really greasy things

8. What is your favorite CD at the moment? I still really love Hans Zimmer's work w/ pirates 3.

9. What kind of car do you drive? Alas none.

10. Favorite sandwich? I love sandwiches at school.  Hm...something w/ turkey and honey mustard and mozerella is also good.

11. What characteristics do you despise? hypocrites, fakeness, superficiality, trivialness

12. Favorite item of clothing? Hm...sweatshirts

13. Favorite piece of jewelry? Nice watches.

14. If you could go anywhere in the world on vacation, where would you go? I agree w/ Alice, New Zealand sounds good but I haven't been to Europe yet and would love to go sometime.  Although as of late I dislike the fact that people are expected to go to Europe (or if you havent been people are like Oh man, you should go b/c it's so awesome!) while people really aren't "expected" to go to Asia (I've hardly ever heard people say oh man you have to visit X country in Asia)

15. What color is your bathroom? White and modern

16. Favorite brand of clothing? I still wear a lot from Gap but it's not like my favorite.

17. Where would you retire to? Hawaii

18. What was your most memorable birthday? That's hard.  Freshie year brithday was a small group but somehow it sticks out b/c it was actually quite unexpected.  I dunno, I tend to remeber other people's birthday surprises (which I plan) a lot more.  Maybe my 20th b/c I was freaking out about that one so much adn when it actually happened it was all right.

19. Favorite sport to watch? None really but Gymnastics and figure skating are cool.

20. Furthest place this will be read? Uh....probably across the U.S. West Coast

21. Who do you least expect to repeat this meme? Hm...

22. Person you expect to do it first? someone who doesn't use lj much anymore

23. Favorite saying? Hmm I should find one that I can whip out at any time but I would pick something that initially appears to be witty/sardonically funny but then as you think about it it turns out to be rather deep and even a bit saddening.

24. When is your birthday? Nov. 5.

25. Are you a morning person or a night person? Usually night but lately I can't stay up too late.

26. What is your shoe size? 6.5(ocassionally)  or usually 7

27. Pets? gophers in our backyard? my fruit flies and for a few days a cute little kitty
28. Any new and exciting news you'd like to share with us? I went camping and kayaking for the first time and saw TDK!  And I have my GREs next week.

29. What did you want to be when you were little? an astronaut and then I saw a scary space movie where the astronauts all died and then I learned about physics....

30. What are you doing today? neuroscience

32. What is your favorite flower? hm...orchids maybe

50. Chocolate or Vanilla? Vanilla

51. Do you want your friends to do this meme? Sure

54. Who is the friend you have had the longest? Uh....hm I don't really talk to too many people from elementary school anymore.  Maybe Wendy?  Rachel B?

Well back from the hospital. Well the cough is broncitous.

The eye is a different story. They don't know. It looks fine but they can't account for it being blurry. So another hospital I have to go to tomorrow where they have eye doctors on staff.

discworld

[babydolleyez]
I started reading Discworld about four months ago, and I have read a good dozen of them. I want to recommend them to a friend, but which ones make the best place to start? The first book I read was Men at Arms, and while it was an alright place to start, I know that there has to be a better one. I didn't care for the Colour of Magic, so I don't want to tell her to read that first.

One of the things I enjoy about reading the Discworld series is that no matter how many times I re-read them there's always something that I didn't notice before.

I just noticed for example the minor reference to Sweeney Todd in Jingo. It's only a few lines but it never ceases to amaze me how as I have learned more through life I find more and more things like this in the books. Anyone else found this?

blood [Jul. 21st, 2008|02:55 pm]

anijen21
I have this strange, recent, morbid fascination with serial killers and notable victims.

Wikipedia is far too generous on both of these points.

A few weeks ago, I read the entire articles about Ed Gein and Ted Bundy. In my defense, my internet died while the second one was still open in a tab, so I kind of read it while waiting for my internet to come back.

But just now, indefensibly, I read the articles about Natalie Holloway and Jessica Lynch.

I don't know what's so fascinating about it. Death, blood, whatever. Maybe everyone with mild psychological problems goes through this phase. Or maybe just everyone in general.

I guess I'm most impressed with like...There are tons of slasher movies, you know? A few good ones, most are forgettable, but they're all entertaining. They're entertaining because they're made to scare you, right? At least for a couple of hours. They shock you with copious amounts of red-colored corn syrup and smash cuts and loud, random noises. Editing.

But somehow, reading the truths that they're based on in black-on-white standard wikipedia style is far more disturbing.

I mean, he dug up old ladies who reminded him of his mother, cut off their skin, and made lamp shades. And when someone asked if he'd had sex with the corpses, he wasn't disgusted or offended by the question, he just said, "No, they smelled too bad."

...

WHY IS THAT SO DISTURBING??

If I saw that in a movie, I'd laugh. I'd never believe it. Truth is stranger than fiction. For sure.

Dark Knight [Jul. 21st, 2008|12:28 am]

silent__dreamer
Finally saw the Dark Knight today.  Also went camping this weekend and kayaking today.  Kayaking was nice but tiring.  I will be very tired tomorrow.  And it was very cool getting the hang of it.  I struggled w/ it so much at the beginning though. Gahh I have a presentation to give on Tuesday and I haven't done a thing for it yet.  This weekend's been a bubble and it's been one of those times when a small chunk of time feels like a lot.

*spoilers*

Onto the Dark Knight...I'm not disappointed but I definitely can't say that I like it as much as Batman Begins.  TDK is more original, less blockblustery but w/e give me the more contrived plotlines w/ more characterization which is what I really care about.  I'd love to see it again though to pick up more details and to notice new tidbits.  I think one of the reasons why I liked BB so much is b/c of the characterizations; you really get to *know* all of these very interesting, fantastic characters and you care about them and it's a very character centered movie.
TDK is more of an ideas based movie and I just found it so much harder to connect w/ the characters even Bruce Wayne.  (on that note, Christian Bale looked so fantastic in this movie).
-Heath Ledger's Joker was fantastic; all that praise in the reviews is completely accurate and the movie really comes to life when he's there.
-I didn't really care much for the Harvey Dent/Two Face storyline.  I see what they were trying to do w/ it w/ the very cool triangles at the end but i think the actor for Two Face just didn't really pull it off or make it believable that he was the white knight.
-Commissioner Gordon is awesome, as always.  Was surprised when he "died" but relieved when he came back.
-I liked how dark the movie was.  The Joker's random killings especially the first one w/ the phony batman.
-Didn't see enough Alfred or Lucius, who are awesome or Bruce Wayne/Batman for that fact which is the primary reason why I didn't like it as much as I hoped to.  I wish they actually delved into Bruce Wayne a bit more and how conflicted he felt w// everything/his moral code.
-I absolutely hated the use of so many random secondary, sideline characters (eg the random dumb thugs etc)  who you really don't get to know at all.
-Hm...and there's of course Rachel Dawes who I still can't bring myself to like.  I thought I'd like her a bit more w/ someone else besides Katie Holmes playing her but still.....  W/ the batman movies the love stories have always been the weakest points and it's very very hard to connect to it or care for it b/c the batman vs. criminals are so much more interesting.

okay so in general I hate the new layout

and when I still had a subscribed account and I looked at the beta version, I thought they were joking. APPARENTLY THE JOKE IS ON ME.

But this is pretty gol-darned sweet:

okay actually that never works, but the point is you can PICK SONGS to play in your playlist now. I feel like this is the final step that will vanquish the need to own music anymore. I thought the only reason you couldn't pick what song to listen to before was because of copyright law, but whatever. I WILL TAKE UGLY LAST.FM IF I GET TO KEEP THIS TOO.

I'm going to go listen to the theme from Schindler's List like 1000 times now BECAUSE I DON'T OWN IT.

AND I DON'T HAVE TO :)

I feel weird today [Jul. 16th, 2008|12:40 pm]

idk what it is, but whatever.

I am so pissed that I didn't buy tickets for The Dark Knight in advance. I really didn't think it would be this huge. There are seven midnight showings at the big theater downtown and they are ALL SOLD OUT. WHAT THE HELL. Ugh. So I think I'll see it on the first showing Sunday morning. Hopefully I won't be spoiled before then. Though I think I already kind of was, damnit.

I'm sick of most of my music. If you have a suggestion, leave it in the comments!

Yeah I feel so weird today. Like tired and a little nauseous, but not sick. I just want to go back to bed. I am like seriously considering leaving work early. It will be worse once this guy comes back from lunch and starts smelling again. He gives me a headache.

What's your favorite thing to do online? Like when you're stuck online with nothing better to do? Oooh Text Twist. I forgot about Text Twist.

I want to bake a cake. But I do not have the necessities at my apartment.

GOD I AM SO BORING UGH THIS SUMMER IS SO BORING I'll shut up now.

I'm so exhausted and tired of working and it is only Tuesday.  I need a break badly.  I'm thinking of having a very easy day (sometime) very soon again b/c I am just so tired.  (I also worked over the weekend.  5 hours on Sat. and a full day w/ a bbq in between on Sunday).   I came in very late on Monday (11- it wasa so awesome) but didn't leave till like 9:30 when it got terribly quiet and lonely in the fly room.  I really should get back to work though.

I'm tired and I want to go back to sleep.

Well I saw Hancock and Wanted the other day and both movies were good. Wanted actually surprised me a bit because I didn't think I'd like it as much as I did. So far this year, the summer movie season has been going well. Though this weekend will huge.

The Dark Knight is coming out and I'll be breathing this movie this summer. If I see it any less then 3 times I'll be shocked. I want to see it bad. I'll probably see Hellboy 2 this weekend as well. I want to see that one pretty bad as well.

I think I'm going to cook some mac and cheese, so later everyone.

I'm going to home despot for tubing to make big hula hoops (see this tutorial).

Anyone else interested? The store sells 100-foot spools of 100psi tubing in 1" and 3/4" diameters. I don't think I'm going to want 100 feet of the stuff! If enough people were interested buying tubing from me, I could buy a spool of each size...

Actual Update: Summer [Jul. 14th, 2008|02:06 pm]

thesasseffect
So, I've realized that once again my blog has digressed to rants, news-pulls, and random asides. Not that that's a problem. But here's a brief update of my actual life.

Spring semester finished quite well, tied for my best semester yet actually.
As for the summer, I'm not taking classes but working near full-time (30-40 hours) at two computer labs, the IT labs located in Union South and Memorial Library as well as the TLC locations all around campus. Essentially I sit in front of a computer and get paid big g's.
I've spent a good amount of time socializing and I'm very happy with that aspect of my life currently. My friends are great.
Ryan and I are also great. :D
I've also been reading, gaming and biking a lot, though oddly, not watching a ton of movies. Just finished Six Feet Under, now watching Brothers & Sisters.
Been cooking/baking a lot too.
Law School stuff is coming together. Just a few more things to do. It'll all be over in November, then I won't have to decide until May. Heavily considering Boston University as both a practical and respectable school.
My hair is currently blonde-ish.
Although I don't want summer to end, I'm very excited about my fall schedule with the exception of early modern Japanese Lit. and Spanish Linguistics.
Going to get a new computer this fall-- whenever apple announces the new macbooks, really. Then I'll decide what to do.
Project Runway starts tomorrow and I'm super excited. I'm going as Christian from Season 4 for Halloween.

Generally speaking, my life is pretty good right now. And I'm happy. :D Just wish my apartment were cleaner.
